SERIES: SHADES OF HUMAN LIFE

When was the last time you did something purely for yourself?

Not because you had to.

Not because someone expected it from you.

Not because it would earn you money, recognition, or success.

But simply because it made you happy.

Now ask yourself one more question.

Did you truly enjoy that moment?

Or was there a quiet voice somewhere in the back of your mind saying:

„I should be doing something more productive.”

„I’m wasting time.”

„Isn’t this a little selfish?”

I have a feeling that many of us don’t struggle with working too hard.

We don’t struggle with helping other people.

We don’t struggle with giving our time to family, friends, or colleagues.

But the moment we decide to do something only for ourselves…

guilt quietly appears.

As if joy were a reward we first had to earn.

Why Is It So Difficult to Allow Ourselves to Be Happy?

I experience it myself more often than I’d like to admit.

There are days when I walk along the beach.

I sit down with a cup of coffee.

I watch the ocean.

I do absolutely nothing.

And instead of simply enjoying the moment, my mind immediately starts racing.

Maybe I should be writing another article.

Maybe I should answer my emails.

Maybe I should work on my next project.

Because there’s always something waiting to be done.

The to-do list never really ends.

And the moment we step away from it…

many of us begin to feel uncomfortable.

Almost as if we’ve done something wrong.

Sometimes I wonder where that feeling comes from.

Were we taught from childhood that our value depends on how much we accomplish?

Did success slowly become more important than peace?

Did productivity quietly become more valuable than happiness?

Perhaps we didn’t even notice the moment we started believing that rest is something we have to deserve.

Me sitting by the ocean and enjoying a peaceful morning by the ocean in Bali.

Is Taking Care of Yourself Really Selfish?

It’s a word we hear all the time.

Selfish.

All it takes is saying „no.”

Taking a few days off.

Spending an evening alone.

Booking a massage.

Going to yoga.

Sitting quietly with a book.

And suddenly a familiar voice appears inside us.

„Shouldn’t you be doing something for someone else?”

For many years, I had those thoughts too.

Because there is always someone who needs help.

Someone who needs our time.

Our attention.

Our support.

And that’s a beautiful thing.

Helping others gives life meaning.

But over time I realized something important.

We are not an endless source of energy.

We cannot keep pouring into other people’s lives if we are completely empty ourselves.

It’s a lot like the safety instructions you hear every time you board an airplane.

Put on your own oxygen mask first.

Only then help the person next to you.

Not because you’re more important.

But because if you run out of air…

you won’t be able to help anyone.

I think life works exactly the same way.

If we ignore our own needs for years…

our rest…

our emotions…

our health…

our joy…

one day we discover that we simply have nothing left to give.

Not because we don’t care.

But because we’re exhausted.

Physically.

Mentally.

Emotionally.

Exhausted from believing that we always have to be everything for everyone.

Yet taking care of yourself isn’t the opposite of caring for others.

Very often…

it’s where caring for others begins.

The World Has Taught Us That We Must Earn Rest

We live in a world where being busy has almost become a badge of honor.

When someone asks,

„How have you been?”

our answer is often something like,

„I’ve been incredibly busy.”

„Work has been crazy.”

„I barely have time for anything.”

As if the number of tasks on our calendar somehow determined our worth.

As if resting were a sign of laziness.

Sometimes I feel that many of us have forgotten how to simply sit still.

Without checking our phones.

Without opening our laptops.

Without planning tomorrow.

Without feeling guilty for not being productive.

Even when we go on vacation, we try to make every minute count.

See everything.

Visit every attraction.

Take hundreds of photos.

Post them online.

Reply to messages.

Answer emails.

And somehow…

we return home more exhausted than when we left.

Perhaps because rest isn’t about changing your location.

It’s about changing the way you experience the moment.

Walking on the beach as a symbol of slowing down

Joy Is Not a Luxury

For a long time, I believed I had to get everything under control first.

Finish all my projects.

Reach the next goal.

Earn a little more.

Help everyone who needed me.

And only then…

I would finally allow myself to enjoy life.

The problem is…

that „later” rarely arrives.

Because life always adds something else.

Another responsibility.

Another deadline.

Another problem waiting to be solved.

If we keep waiting for the perfect moment…

we may end up waiting forever.

The older I get, the more I believe that joy isn’t a reward.

It isn’t a luxury.

It isn’t something we should postpone until retirement.

Joy is fuel.

It’s what gives us the strength to keep moving.

It’s what reminds us why we’re here in the first place.

Not simply to complete another task.

But to truly experience life.

The Most Beautiful Moments of My Life Were Never Productive

When I look back at my life…

I don’t remember the hours I spent sitting in front of a computer.

I don’t remember most of the emails I sent.

I don’t remember many business meetings.

But I clearly remember…

laughing with friends.

Long conversations late at night.

Walking without a destination.

Watching sunrises.

Watching sunsets.

Children playing in the streets of Cambodia.

Conversations with local people in Hoi An.

The smiles of children in Bali.

Quiet moments by the ocean.

None of those moments were „productive.”

None of them increased my bank account.

None of them made me more successful.

Yet every single one of them made my life richer.

And sometimes I wonder if we’ve misunderstood what productivity really means.

Does being productive only mean making money?

Or could it also mean becoming a calmer…

more present…

more compassionate human being?

Mask of joy.

That Is also Why C.U.D. Was Created

The more I travel…

the more convinced I become that C.U.D. Experience was never created simply to organize retreats.

The world already has countless travel companies.

I never wanted to build another one.

I wanted to create something different.

A space where people can stop trying to prove their worth.

Not because they’ve achieved success.

Not because they’re the best.

Not because they work harder than everyone else.

But simply because they exist.

I believe many of us spend our entire lives trying to earn the right to rest.

The right to feel happy.

The right to experience joy.

Yet children never wonder whether they’ve earned the right to laugh.

They don’t ask whether they’re allowed to run barefoot.

They don’t analyze whether it’s appropriate to admire a sunset.

They simply do it.

And that’s exactly the part of ourselves I hope people rediscover during a C.U.D. retreat.

Not the childish part.

The authentic part.

The part that still knows how to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

A meaningful conversation.

A slow walk.

Laughter.

Silence.

Because perhaps the greatest luxury in today’s world isn’t staying in a five-star hotel.

Perhaps the greatest luxury is sitting still…

without feeling that you should be somewhere else.

And if you can experience a moment like that without guilt…

you may already be wealthier than you realize.

H2: Life Doesn’t Wait Until You’re Ready

There’s something I’ve been thinking about more and more lately.

We often live as if we have unlimited time.

We postpone joy.

We postpone our dreams.

We postpone traveling.

We postpone meaningful conversations.

We postpone rest.

We keep telling ourselves:

„Not yet.”

„I’ll finish this project first.”

„I’ll earn a little more money first.”

„I’ll get everything sorted out first.”

And life…

doesn’t always wait.

The older I get, the more I realize that the perfect moment doesn’t exist.

There will never be a day when every problem disappears.

There will never be a month when everything is finally under control.

There will always be another responsibility.

Another email.

Another challenge.

Another reason to wait.

If we keep waiting for life to become perfect…

we may never actually start living it.

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Others Is a Happier You

For many years, I believed that giving meant constantly sacrificing myself.

The more I gave…

the better person I thought I was becoming.

Today, I see it differently.

Because when we’re exhausted…

we become impatient.

We lose empathy.

We stop being fully present.

Sometimes we don’t even notice the people we genuinely want to help.

But a person who knows how to care for themselves…

has more space to care for others.

Not just physically.

But emotionally.

Wholeheartedly.

This isn’t about living only for yourself.

That would indeed be selfish.

It’s about understanding that taking care of yourself is part of taking care of the people you love.

You cannot keep pouring from an empty cup.

But when your own cup is full…

sharing becomes effortless.

What Children Continue to Teach Me

Since I started teaching children…

I’ve noticed something beautiful.

Children never ask for permission to feel joy.

They don’t wonder whether their laughter is appropriate.

They don’t analyze whether it’s the right moment to dance.

They don’t worry about being judged.

If something makes them happy…

they simply enjoy it.

Then we grow up.

And somehow we begin asking the world for permission.

Am I allowed to rest?

Am I allowed to do nothing today?

Am I allowed to travel?

Am I allowed to say no?

Am I allowed to choose myself for once?

Perhaps that’s one of the saddest parts of becoming an adult.

At some point, we stop asking ourselves what we need…

and start asking everyone else.

Perhaps This Is What Real Wealth Looks Like

The older I become…

the less impressed I am by things.

The more impressed I am by people.

People who laugh with their whole heart.

People who aren’t afraid to cry.

People who put their phones away during a conversation.

People who look you in the eyes when you speak.

People who don’t feel the need to prove anything.

People who can sit quietly with a cup of coffee.

Watch the sunset.

Walk barefoot on a beach.

And simply…

be.

Without guilt.

I think those people are truly wealthy.

Not because they own more.

But because they experience more.

Because they haven’t forgotten how to be present.

Conclusion

The more life teaches me…

the more I believe that joy is not a reward for living well.

Joy is part of living well.

You don’t have to earn it.

You don’t have to justify it.

You don’t have to apologize for it.

If walking through a forest brings you peace…

take that walk.

If reading a book helps you breathe again…

allow yourself that time.

If traveling reminds you who you truly are…

keep traveling.

If a meaningful conversation gives you hope…

make time for it.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish.

Real selfishness would be expecting yourself to give everything to the world…

while leaving nothing for yourself.

Because you are also part of that world.

And you deserve the same kindness you so willingly offer to everyone else.

Maybe today it’s time to stop asking:

„Am I allowed to feel joy?”

And start asking a different question:

„Why did I believe for so long that I wasn’t?”

I truly believe life wasn’t given to us simply to survive.

It was given to us to feel.

To experience.

To connect.

To love.

And sometimes…

the bravest thing you can do isn’t climbing another mountain or chasing another achievement.

Sometimes the bravest thing is much simpler.

To sit down.

Put your phone away.

Look up at the sky.

Smile.

And not feel guilty for a single second.

Different Backgrounds. One Heart. 鉂わ笍

No matter where we come from.

No matter what we do for a living.

No matter how much money we earn.

Or how different our stories may seem.

Deep down…

we all long for the same things.

Peace.

Connection.

Joy.

And the feeling that we are enough just as we are.

Perhaps that’s where true happiness begins.

Not when the world finally gives us permission to enjoy life…

But when we stop waiting for that permission and give it to ourselves.
